Looking for a Writer/Collaborator

Journal Entry: Wed Apr 2, 2008, 7:29 PM
I'm looking for a writer or perhaps another artist to collab with on a comic/manga project. The goal is to eventually pitch said project to publishers. Currently I'm mainly interested in:

1) Fairy tale and Folklore retellings - particularly those in the vein of Liao Zhai ZhiYi by Pu Songling. [link] Think "Chinese Ghost Story" or "Bride of the Water God". As seen in my art, I favor Asian stories more but I am open to stuff such as "Ella Enchanted", "The 10th Kingdom", "No Rest For the Wicked", "Shrek", etc.

2) Genre of:

a) romantic-fantasy: mainly eastern or in a east + west hybrid. Unfortunately for the time being I am not very interested in Tolkien-esque types of fantasy.

b) romantic-comedy: i.e. fairy tale parodies

c) or romantic-historical with a shoujo feel. My favorite history eras are Victorian, Edwardian, Heian, Tang Dynasty, Ming Dynasty, 20's-40's, Regency (Jane Austen)...

And well... what I want is pretty much just a good and compelling romance story - beyond fluffy shoujo type of stories. (I hate to admit it but I am a hopeless romantic).

3) An interesting and or quirky female protagonist. Doesn't have to be a butt-kicking heroine, but she shouldn't be a passive wallflower. I like female characters who may not be strong physically but have an inner strength.

4) Or a story revolving around Asian-Americans, perhaps with issues dealing with assimilation, stereotypes, etc. E.X. - Picture Brides

5) Rating should be something from G to PG13

Basically I just want a story that I'll fall in love with and be willing to put time and effort into.

I would also prefer it more if you were located somewhere in the USA and are over 18.

What I do not want to work on:
1) Epics, anything beyond 1-3 volumes
2) Sci-Fi (due to lack of skill with drawing machinery, robots and mechanical things)
3) High School melodramas. The protagonist can be of High School age, but I don't want to work on a project revolving around Prom, Student Council, etc.
4) Large Casts of Characters

If anyone is interested, send a note, or reply here with a short summary of your story and/or some writing samples.

Hmmm I would love to, but it seems you are looking for someone who is Asian-American themselves and I am most definitely not Asian-American.

If you don't mind my pathetic white-girl attempts to blend Western and Asian cultures, I would definitely be interested. I need to practice writing more and I love working on comics. (Also I would love to pitch a collab to publishers since I plan to live off of writing.)

I can't wait to see this project! I adore your style so much and I can't wait to see it combined with another person's talent. I wish you good luck on the project!

How about a true story about women warriors in 1860s Japan? I think it might fit into your "historical with a shoujo feel" idea.

My God...hm...Well, I don't have very much for length or anything, nor do I have anything really "Asian," the most polished writing I think I've ever produced features only two characters and one setting... I suppose I'll link you to that, but based on your criterion you may not even want to spend your time looking at it.

This makes me sad because I'd love to help you out!

Sounds like a great idea. I deal mostly with fantasy genre based. This would actually be a good oppertunity to expand our various skills and work other artists, which I would most definately like. I'm not too sure how good I would be with a quirky asian female character. But, I am most definately interested. A suggestion, maybe try to have more than one artist involved. Say, two for storyline/writing, 2 for artwork, 2 for editting, most manga groups are comprised of more than 2 people. Just an idea, and like I said, I am very much interested.

Awww. I would love to. Not sure if I would have time because of work and school. But I'm actually going to write a poem or perhaps a short story about Asian American immigration experience for school.

I'd say my expertise is romance and poetry. I've written really short prose and a few short stories.

I'm interested in helping though, even a little bit. Give ideas, or critiques or something. :]

Here are some samples. Enjoy!

Not necessarily. You don't have to be Asian-American to be well versed in Asian-American history/culture. Case in point: One of my profs in a Asian-American Studies class was Caucasian, and his lectures were awesome. But uh... I digress. ^^;

Well I'm also interested in Fairy-Tale parodies or retellings with a twist from Grimms, Perrault, Hans Christian Anderson, etc. Stuff like "The 10th Kingdom", "Ella Enchanted", "Shrek" (without the potty humor tho), and so on.

Your writing is quite good, although that type of high fantasy isn't exactly what I'm looking for. What I'm hoping for and would really enjoy working on is something along the lines of a "Liao Zhai ZhiYi" sort of feel - i.e. Supernatural lovers, fox demons, bittersweet romance and so on. Or possibly something akin to Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Hmmm, most creator teams I've come across tend to consist of a writer and an artist. Speaking from experience, the more members you have on a team, the harder it is to manage, especially if you live on different sides of the world. Assistants on the other hand are a different matter of course.
